Default New to GW, Have some questions!

Hey guys.

Im brand new to guild wars(well ive played the trial) ... I have a few questions im hoping some GW veteran could answer for me please, Ive just bought GW through steam.

1.) I've just bought GW - GOTY edition(downloading now via steam) what's the difference between standard guild wars & the game of the year edition?

2.) Ive heard the word "farm" or "farming" used quite alot what exactly is "farming"? What does it do?

3.) Is there any specific build that's good for both PvP & PvE?

4.) I know you have to make a new char to go into the PvP server, Can this new PvP char have the same name as your role-playing char? ... Will he carry over any of the role-play content/weapons you have acquired? Or is hea totally separate char?

I think that if for now lol.

Thanks in advance & i will really appreciate any answers given.

Hi and welcome to the world of Guildwars!

First i want to tell you about Guildwars Wiki as that site can nearly answer every question you have... wiki is also accessible via the F10 button in GW itself.

1) I *think* the GOTY offers some extra items, but i am not 100% sure about this... try to type /bonus in your chat (don't forget the / sign) and you may end up with some free items

2) Farming is basically killing enemies in PVE and selling the drops (to merchant and if valuable to other players); preferably solo and in Hard Mode (that usually gives you the best drops), but HM needs to be unlocked by completing a campaign at least once.

3) I only play PVE (and a bit of Alliance Battle (AB)) but i think the PVP-world differs too much from the PVE-world, so i doubt that (it may depend on the profession)...

4) No, you cant use the same name on a PVE and a PVP character (every name must be unique)

Have fun with GW

Game wise nothing is different, but with the GotY edition you receive a few free items.

The Bonus items are seven weapons customized to your characters. These include:

1. Tiger's Roar (Elementalist Focus Item)
2. Poisonous Nevermore Flatbow (Ranger Bow)
3. Sundering Rhino's Charge (Warrior Hammer)
4. Serrated Shield (Warrior Shield)
5. Wolf's Favor (Monk Focus Item)
6. Luminescent Scepter (Mesmer Wand)
7. Insightful Soul Shrieker (Necromancer Staff)

http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Guil...e_Year_Edition

Farming is bassically repeating a particular area over and over again, most of the time because it gives good rewards(items and so), good exp, or is fast.

The shock axe is a pretty good build for both.
http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Shock_Axe
You might want to consider changing Shock for something else thought, in pve knock downs are not so much needed except for certain areas.

You dont need to create a pvp char for a pvp server you can use it on all the pvp content.Your pve character once you deem him good enough for pvp, will be able to go to the same places your pvp character is bound to.PVp does not unlock much for pve characters except for skills, if your pvp chacater buys skill with baltazhar faction (basicly pvp gold) your pve character of the same class that the skill was unlocked would be able to buy the skill in pve earlier in the storyline.
The pve character and the pvp character are different characters so no they cant share names or items, you can give your pvp character your pve character's weapon but then your pve character wont have that weapon untill you return it to him.

You can get weapon in pve as drops or buy them and then give them to your pvp character and he will be able to use it, You pve character will also unlock weapon and armor upgrades for your pvp character each time they identify a new upgrade.( identifying is bassacily the act of using a identification kit to find out what the upgrade is)

Phew

Here is a handy tip if you want to download everything for the game, so you dont have to wait everytime you enter a new zone, right click on your GW shortcut and go to propertias and in the target box add " -image" to the end of the line, so it should be something like "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image, this command will download all the files you will need to play, this will take quite some time to download so it is advisable to do it while you sleep one night.

To be able to play again remove the " -image" command otherwise you wont be able to play and it will just keep trying to update.

Guildwars Phropecies which is the one you got, has a good learning curve, and i would suggest as a first time player to follow the storyline all the way to the end.You might see people offering "runs"to places in game, they offer people runs to cities and outpost further into the map that you might not have yet,but taking that will rob you from some very helpfull experience in the game.

Play your class as it was meant to be played, for the first time around you should learn what your class can do, only take a few skills from your secondary class and only to help your primary class, at most you should have 2 skills 3 if you want to count ressurection skills.Dont except your monks to do everything, bringing one heal skill is not bad idea, npc monks tend to run out of energy pretty fast, so its good if you can help yourself.

In short: yes... the longer version is a bit more complicated (skills <> spells <> stances, etc) but you will see that soon enough. In GW you only can bring 8 of those with you, so you have to choose wisely before starting a quest of mission (you only can change your "build" (=your 8 skills) in outposts and towns).

I suggest you start with a PVE character. That way you learn the basics of the game. And every skill that you buy (or receive as a reward) can also be used by your future PVP characters (or heroes if you decide to buy Nightfall and.or Eye of the North too).

Lol yes when you are simply swining your weapon around its called auto attacking, when you use any of the "moves" youhave its called a skill, but pay attention that all of them together are called skills but under that there are different types of skills

Attack An enchanced melee or projectile attack.
Spell.A skill that results in a one-time effect, such as damage, healing, energy loss or gain.
Enchantment Spell.A spell that causes a postive effect for a period of time.(e.g. speed, health, increased armor or increased energy)
Hex Spell.A spell that causes a negative effect for period of time.
Signet.A skill that costs no energy to use.
Preparation.A skill that enchances your attacks for the next few seconds.
Trap.Creates a trap that you set up and leave for you renemy to trigger.
Shout.A motivational phrase that benefits your and nearby allies,or hinder nearby enemies.
Stance.A posture that provides an advantage in battle, either by protecting against attacks,or improving your offensive abilities.
Glyph.A skill that enchances the next spell(s) you cast.
Nature Ritual.Create a totem that emites an environmental effect affecting allies and foes alike.

There is a few more, but this is what you will find in GWP.

I think i will more than likely roll a Warrior or Ranger.

What would be a good secondary class for either of the above?

For either of them you could go with elementalist and take Conjure Flame or Conjure Frost or Conjure Lightning, depending on what weapon you have available to you.

If your choose warrior you could go necromancer secondary for Plague Touch to return conditions you suffer(conditions are things like bleeding, cripple, blind etc).

You can also go monk to be able to use a reuseable resurrection skill.

Also, later in the game you can change your secondary profession.

So don't be too worried or feel locked in to your choices.

A Ranger/Elementalist with Conjure Lightning can be really good, since you can get a bow early in the game that causes Lightning Damage (which triggers the Conjure Lightning skill).
You can then remove the modification from the bow that causes it to deal lightning damage, and then add it to another bow, when you get a better one.

Some bonus items (which are unique looking, but not particularly good stat-wise). I think maybe you also get an extra emote (but I'm not sure).

To use a very specialized build that is capable of solo killing a particular set of monsters over and over again as a means of getting rich.

1. No. Aside from the fact that PvE builds can (and should) include powerful PvE-only skills, PvE and PvP builds are aimed at beating very different foes. Human opponents have the same teamsize as you, are relatively intelligent, have reasonably well-designed builds, and have the same "sane" values for all of their stats that your team has. The PvE monsters are the opposite in every respect. What works particularly well in one game mode may prove ineffective or even unnecessary in the other.

2. In case you didn't know "build" refers to the totality of a character's configuration -- profession, secondary profession, attribute spread, skillset, and equipment.

A PvP char is a totally separate character. However, you should probably note that PvE characters can enter PvP arenas and play PvP. If you want to PvP with your PvE character you can.

It should be green, but whatever colour it is, it points to where you have to go for your quest. (remember, you can map travel!)

Or, if you mean the tiny, tiny little triangles that means they are NPC's you can talk to.

Cheers so far guys ... Really helpful

I remember i had primary & secondary quests in the starting/tutorial area .... I have now left that area & don't seem to have any primary quests, I can pick quests from NPC's but i dont seem to have any primary quests for the main story line any more!

Do you actually still have primary story driven quests after the starting/tutorial area? or do you just go around getting quests from NPC's?

EDIT: I must say im really enjoying it so far, Great helpful community, superb graphics & a hell of a load of stuff to do .... (just played for two hours non stop lol)

Hey ATOJAR, if you want some in-game help, my character's name is Aidin Swiftarrow. What's your in-game name? I'd be willing to help you learn the ropes and even help you with quests, missions, builds, and maybe even buy you your first armor set To private message me in game, you can press N and then add Aidin Swiftarrow to your friends list. From there, if I'm online, you can click the icon next to my name and click the send message button. Or....you could message me on Guild Wars Guru by clicking my username and then sending me a message.

Sorry for the wall of text xD!

- Aidin Swiftarrow

EDIT: There are primary quests, regular quests, and missions. Primary quests bring you farther into the campaign and lead you to missions. Quests may also play a part in this.

How do you know where to go to get your primary quests?

Is there no way to tell who gives primary quests, regular quests, and missions?

It should be logical, something like this:

Primary quest: go to mister x
mister x: here is your reward, and here is a new primary quest
primary quest: go to mister y in outpost z
mister y: here is your reward
outpost z turns into mission z
do mission z
you end up in outpost o next to person c
person c has a new primary quest

It's all quite linear.

2. "To use a very specialized build that is capable of solo killing a particular set of monsters over and over again as a means of getting rich." This person hit it dead on.

3. No

4. Totally separate.
